Can I join KiwiSaver?
Anyone under 65 can join KiwiSaver if they are entitled to stay in New Zealand indefinitely, and living in (or normally living in) New Zealand. However, if you’re already a KiwiSaver member or you join while you meet the criteria, you can stay in KiwiSaver if you move overseas.
What contributions do I make?
If you're not receiving salary or wages with NZ PAYE deducted, then a 4% or 8% contribution rate does not apply. You can essentially make whatever contributions you like to KiwiSaver, either directly to Grosvenor or through Inland Revenue. No initial contribution is required.
How does living overseas affect my account?
Living overseas will affect your entitlement to some of the KiwiSaver benefits.
If you’re not employed from New Zealand, you won’t receive matching contributions from your employer. Your eligibility for the member tax credits of up to $20/week also depends on where you live.
KiwiSaver members are only entitled to receive member tax credits while their principal place of residence is in New Zealand. (There are exceptions if working for the NZ Government overseas, or for an approved charity for token payment.)
When you withdraw your savings from KiwiSaver you’ll need to make a statutory declaration stating when your principal place of residence was or was not New Zealand. Making a false declaration is perjury and subject to severe criminal penalties - don’t go there!
KiwiSaver still an attractive way to save
Joining before you move overseas will ensure you receive $1,000 to kick start your account. While you’re not earning salary with NZ PAYE deducted you have complete flexibility in making contributions, and could choose not to make any contributions at all.
